Abstract Good manufacturing practice (GMP) audits are carried out for a variety of reasons which require the auditor to be flexible in approach to the style and content of the audit. This article discusses some of the circumstances in which audits are conducted, and how this affects the approach taken. The merits of advance preparation, checklists and audit trails in specific situations are described. To be effective, audits must be focused and carefully planned, and when carried out well, can be rewarding for both the auditor and the auditee. Published in 2000 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
