Abstract Systematic comparisons of the effects of the linewidth enhancement factor, confinement factor, internal loss, and cavity length on the variations of the single‐mode gain difference and the emission wavelength in quarter‐wavelength phase‐shifted DFB lasers as a function of injection current are presented. Several design guidelines are presented to reduce the variations of the single‐mode gain difference and the emission wavelength. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
