Abstract A preliminary report on 27 postmenopausal patients with soft tissue lesions of advanced breast cancer evaluates skin temperature changes over the tumor in predicting response to hormonal therapy. The thermoprofile across the tumor and its bed was selected as a parameter in preference to other thermographic methods. Serial measurements were carried out, and the observations correlated with the clinical activity of the tumor before therapy and its response to hormonal therapy. Of 14 patients who showed a decrease of 1 C or more in the thermoprofile peak value within 2 weeks of initiating hormonal therapy, 8 manifested clinical evidence of tumor regression later. Of 13 patients who showed either increase or less than 1 C decrease in the thermoprofile peak value, none showed evidence of tumor regression later.
