Abstract In this article, we provide a partial answer to the question “How can engineering curricula accommodate the many demands for reform?” Drawing on experiences redesigning the civil engineering curriculum at Colorado State University, we explore the use of Web‐based instructional tools to enhance students' ability to work in groups and communicate effectively. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
