Drug metabolizing enzymes are known to be present and active in most extrahepatic tissues. In this review, evidence is presented that expression and activity of several extrahepatic drug‐metabolizing enzymes are regulated in unique ways, which may be associated with tissue functions and activities. In several instances evidence is offered that hormonal effects may be regulated through tissue specific distribution and/or responses of transcription factors. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
