Abstract The generation of a frequency comb of optical signals with equal frequency spacing has been demonstrated in a semiconductor‐fiber ring laser. A simplified theoretical approach based on cascade cavity‐enhanced four‐wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier is given, and potential applications are described. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
