Using Condon's quantum oscillator methodology to examine the implications for optical rotary behavior of the classical electromagnetic fields, we provide a simple derivation showing that nonreciprocity is not to be expected in ordinary chiral‐like media. Furthermore, we conclude that the only way to achieve such desired nonreciprocal attributes is to combine such chiral materials with known nonreciprocating media. Published 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
