The toxic effects of heavy metals in stack gases from industrial furnaces were taken into account in the emission limits of the German law 17. BImschV (17. Bundes‐Immissionsschutzgesetz‐Verordnung) from November 23, 1990. Results of the first manual stack emission samplings are presented. During the sampling period a new active carbon packed‐bed reactor was installed for further cleaning of the stack gases. A reduction by a factor of 10 for most elements was observed. Because of their resistance to hot (150°C) and corrosive gases, quartz fibre filters were used for sampling the emitted aerosols. The aerosol‐loaded filters were analysed using an X‐lab XRF‐spectrometer (Spectro A.I.) calibrated with laboratory‐developed standard filters. In the future, a combined sampling and analysis system for continuous emission control, planned together with Spectro A.I. (Germany) with financial support of the German Federal Department of Education and Science (BMBF), will be used. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
