The results of semiautomated Papanicolaou smear screening are somewhat better than those of current conventional screening. An in‐depth analysis of cost‐effectiveness is required to evaluate whether this gain in accuracy is achieved within reasonable cost limits. The monitor screening procedure is hampered, as is conventional light microscopic screening, by the subjectivity of the diagnosis. See also pages 273‐80.
