A common assumption is that a large system, weakly coupled to a thermalenvironment through its boundaries, relaxes quasi-statically towards the newequilibrium even when the temperature of the environment changes abruptly. Herewe show how this intuitive picture can break down in discrete energy systems,even in the case of infinitely weak coupling. We provide an example in theIsing antiferromagnetic chain, showing how the interaction among degrees offreedom can create corrugated energy landscapes that are responsible forfar-from-equilibrium and anomalous relaxations.
