The Bajawa ar巴ais located in the central part of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia. Th巴 ar巴ais widely underlain by Pliocene to Pl日istocenevoluminous volcanic products and in eludes a d巴pr巴ssion回 lledth巴Bajawad巴pr巴ssion.It extends 13 16 km巴astwest and is mor巴 than 12 km north south with w巴1pr巴servedste巴pcliffs up to 300 400 m in height at the western margin. Stratigraphy of the study area consists of older volcanic rocks (Vl), Bajawa volcanic rocks (Bv), products of cinder con巴 (Cl,C2), Aimere tuf (At) and products of the Inerie volcano (Ie) in asc巴ndingorder. Evolution of the Bajawa area is divided into four stag巴s:(1) In th巴 Pliocene to Early Pleistocene, th巴 Bajawaarea became a site of int巴nsevolcanic activity to form a broad volcanic edific巴 thatcompris巴dth巴 old巴rvolcanic rocks (Vl) ranging from basalt to andesit巴 inth巴 tholeiite seri巴s.(2) Bajawa d巴pr巴ssionoccurred on the central highland of the volcanic edifice formed during stage l. Displacement of subsidence is estimated to have been more than 400 m. (3) The depression was widely filled by Bajawa volcanic rocks (Bv) consisting of andesite lavas and volcaniclastic rocks. Subs巴quently,andesitic cone volcanism occurred along linear fractures and formed some cinder cones (Cl, C2). This volcanism was caused by calc alkaline magma. (4) A large stratovolcano (In巴rievolcano) consisting of tholeitic andesite (I巴) grew at th巴 southwesternmargin of the depr巴ssion.Based on th巴 lineam巴nton th巴 sateliteim agery, alignments of the cinder cones and lin巴ardiscontinuiti田 ofr巴sistivity,it is consider巴d that the formation of the Bajawa depression results from the subsidence of the pre depression rocks that is segmented by north-south, northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest trending faults. The north-south trending fault in th巴 westernpart may be interpreted as the bounding fault that defin巴dthe western rim of the subsidence.
