Focus-background partition has been discussed under a number of different names (e.g. focus-presupposition, theme-rheme, topic-comment, old-new information, etc.) in a wide variety of works in the discourse/pragmatic literature (cf. Givon (1979)). It has been widely acknowledged that focus-background is the informational structuring of sentences required by communicative purposes. The focus encodes what the sentence asserts and the background encodes what is already established in the given discourse context. While significant differences are found among different approaches, recent works in the area of formal semantics seem to share the view that the primary function of focus-background is not pragmatically motivated, but rather it is to provide a quantificational structure for focus sensitive operators.1 The
