In a search for anthracyclines which are able to overcome drug resistance or highly toxic even to adriamycin(ADM)-resistant cells, a total of 37 anthracyclines, including ADM and daunomycin, have been evaluated for their growth inhibitory activity against parental and ADM-resistant L5178Y and P388 cells in vitro. The drug resistance mechanism in L5178Y/ADM is also discussed in comparison with that for P388/ADM.
