A leas t ~quares techniqu e ha s bee n app lied to periodic earth temperature data for the purpose of de te rmining basic cha rac te ri s ti cs of earth temperature cycles , such as thermal diffusiv ity, average temperature , a mplitude, and ph ase a ngle of the te mperature cycle. A new procedure was developed for obtaining a s ingle the rmal diffu s ivit y which represents an average ove r time and de pth at a particular te mperature s it e. This therma l diffus ivity was obtained as a nonlinear part of least squares constants which yie lded a best-fit harm onic c urve to a given set of observed earth te mpe ratures. The th erm al diffus ivity thus ca lcula ted and the calcul ation method developed are preferred to those obtained by curren t practi ce, whi c h yie lds two thermal diffu sivities, one based on amplitude decay a nd another on phase angle s hift.
