全国各地より腐朽したタケ類約300個を採取し,生じている腐朽様式とその出現頻度を調べた。約90%の試料で,タケ細胞壁中に両端の尖った空洞が存在した。さらに,この型の腐朽試料のIRスペクトルは,共通的にアセチル基やウロン酸の優先的除去を示した。これらの結果は,軟腐朽菌Chaetomium globosumによって実験室的に腐朽させたマダケに関する結果と良く一致した。従って,タケ類は自然状態で主に軟腐朽を受けて劣化すると結論出来る。また,約25%の試料では,タケ類の細胞壁上に点々と円または楕円形の空洞が存在し,白腐れ菌Coriolus ver-sticolorで腐朽させた場合の結果と類似した。この観察より,タケ類は自然界において軟腐朽型に次ぐ頻度で白腐れ型の腐朽も受けることが分かった。また,同一試料及びその同一細胞壁に対して,軟腐朽と白腐れが同時的に生じている場合も観察された。
