La transición a la vida independiente de los jóvenes tutelados por la Administración requiere el diseño de planes y actuaciones que se inicien en los centros y se mantengan después que los abandonen. El objetivo de este artículo es conocer cómo se desarrolla esta transición y como es vista por los diferentes implicados, con la finalidad de establecer propuestas educativas que les ayuden a transitar exitosamente. Se recogió información de 21 jóvenes extutelados de Cataluña y de 43 educadores a partir de entrevistas en profundidad. Se han combinado métodos cuantitativos (descriptivo y comparativo) con métodos cualitativos, con el fin de explicar mejor los datos. Los resultados muestran que éstos jóvenes tienen un alto porcentaje de fracaso y movilidad escolar, escasa formación para el empleo, inestabilidad laboral y ocupación de empleos de baja cualificación. Perciben la tutela como fuente de oportunidades educativas que no les ofrecía su hogar biológico. Los factores que explican el bajo rendimiento académico y el fracaso escolar son: alta movilidad escolar, baja autoestima académica, escasa motivación, necesidad de trabajar para mantenerse una vez cumplidos los 18 años, escaso o nulo apoyo familiar, no disponer de espacios para el estudio y no recibir atención para realizar las tareas escolares. Las acciones de orientación realizadas no favorecen que mantengan una vinculación con el sistema educativo una vez cumplidos los 16 años; se orientan hacia la búsqueda y consecución de un empleo, sin desarrollar actuaciones orientadoras que incidan en el mantenimiento y progreso en el mercado laboralThe transition to independent living for young people in care requires the design of plans and actions that are initiated in the residential centers and continue after they leave. The aim of this article is to further understand how this transition takes place and how it is seen by those that are involved, in order to establish educational proposals to help them navigate successfully. Information from 21 young people in care in Catalonia and 43 educators were collected from interviews. Quantitative methods have been combined (descriptive and comparative) with qualitative methods, in order to best explain the data. The results show that these young people have a high percentage of failure and school mobility, limited training for employment, job instability and a career of low-skilled jobs. Foster care is perceived as a source of educational opportunity that was not offered to them in their biological home. The factors behind poor academic performances and school failure are: high school mobility, low academic self-esteem, poor motivation, the need to work to support themselves after the age of 18, little or no family support, no spaces available to study and not receiving attention for homework. The actions of guidance made no favor to maintain a link with the education system after the age of 16 years; they are geared towards finding and achieving employment without developing guiding actions aimed at maintaining and progressing in the labor marke
