These areas are the witnesses of the breakdowns of great empires. Roman Empire broke down, followed by Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungary. That is probably why after World War I a new transitive verb balkanize appeared in English language. Its meaning is “to divide (a territory or a group) into small, often quarrelsome parts”. The example of Yugoslavia only proved the appropriateness of this concept. After collapse of Austro-Hungarian Empire, various South Slavic territories made up a state which last remnants ended on 2006.
