The search for solutions to waste minimization by the industry has increased every year, either by optimizing their processes and reducing manufacturing costs or meeting the requirements of environmental agencies in the sustainable systems framework. The solid waste generated by the milling of vegetable charcoal, commonly discarded in landfills, has been characterized and showed thermal stability, porosity and surface area capable of adsorbing metal ions in an aqueous medium efficiently. The residue had a BET surface area of 330 m2/g, which corresponds to approximately 60% of the area of ??a commercial activated carbon used in water and wastewater treatment. The adsorption efficiency was investigated in different concentrations of Cu2+, Cr6+ and Al3+, temperatures and exposure times. The temperatures and times evaluated had no significant effect on the removal of ions. The initial concentration of ions in mixed solution was important and the ions Al3+ and Cr6+ were efficiently removed even at high concentrations. The use of residue allowed the removal of 70 % of Cu2+, 98 % of Cr6+ and 99 % of Al3+ ions in a natural water doped sample. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.20140101A busca por soluções para a minimização dos resíduos nas indústrias tem sido maior a cada ano, seja para a otimização de seus processos e redução de custos industriais ou pelas exigências dos órgãos ambientais pelo enquadramento em sistemas sustentáveis. O resíduo sólido gerado pela moinha de carvões vegetais, comumente descartados em aterros industriais, foi caracterizado e apresentou estabilidade térmica, porosidade e uma área superficial capaz de adsorver íons metálicos em meio aquoso com eficiência. O resíduo apresentou uma área superficial BET de 330 m2/g, que corresponde a aproximadamente 60 % da área de um carvão ativado comercial usado em tratamento de água e efluentes. A eficiência de adsorção foi investigada em níveis diferentes de concentração dos íons Cu2+, Cr6+ e Al3+ , de temperatura e do tempo de contato. A temperatura e o tempo não influenciaram significativamente na remoção dos íons. A concentração inicial dos íons em solução mista foi importante e os íons Al3+ e Cr6+ foram eficientemente removidos mesmo em altas concentrações. Em amostra de água natural dopada com os íons metálicos o resíduo removeu 70 % dos íons Cu2+, 98 % dos íons Cr6+ e 99% dos íons Al3+. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.2014010
