In this work it was possible to evaluate flame retardant properties of the composite polystyrene PS- layered double hydroxide (LDH) [Mg4Al2(OH)14.3H2O], prepared by addition of the inorganic material via solubilization of polystyrene with chloroform. LDH Mg-Al was synthesized by co-precipitation method and characterized by XRD and laser granulometer. The PS-LDH composite obtained was characterized by FTIR and TGA. The flame retardant effect was determined by comparing the horizontal burning rate of the composite at different concentrations of LDH with pure PS. The results demonstrate that the horizontal burning rate decreases with increasing PS inorganic filler. With about 20 % by weight of layered double hydroxide, the combustion rate reduced to half. Therefore, the technique of PS solubilization in chloroform to addition of the inorganic filler was effective for the production of a composite PS-LDH [Mg4Al2(OH)14.3H2O], with better thermal stability than pure polystyrene. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.20140071Neste trabalho avaliou-se as propriedades retardantes de chama do compósito poliestireno (PS) e hidróxido duplo lamelar (HDL) [Mg4Al2(OH)14.3H2O], preparado por adição do material inorgânico através de solubilização de poliestireno com clorofórmio. O HDL Mg-Al foi sintetizado pelo método de coprecipitação e caracterizado por Difração de Raios-X (DRX) e determinação de tamanho partícula média por granulometria à laser. O compósito PS-HDL  foi caracterizado por Espectrofotometria de Infravermelho (FTIR) e Análise Termogravimétrica (TGA). O efeito retardante de chama foi avaliado pelo comparativo da taxa de queima horizontal do compósito em diferentes concentrações de HDL com o PS puro. Os resultados demonstraram que a taxa de combustão horizontal diminui com o aumento da carga inorgânica no PS. Com 20 % em massa de HDL, a taxa de combustão diminui pela metade. Portanto, a técnica de solubilização PS em clorofórmio com adição da carga inorgânica é eficaz para a produção de um compósito PS-HDL [Mg4Al2(OH)14.3H2O], com maior estabilidade térmica que o poliestireno puro.  DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.2014007
