Lead is metal of great interest to scientific community due to the toxicity of its compounds against living beings. Otherwise, the citrate ion is a complexing agent with the ability to solubilize many metallic ions in solution. However, a few works are reported in the literature upon the dissolution of metallic lead in the presence of citrate ions in acidic solutions. The present work aims to study the lead dissolution into acidic solutions (pH 4) in the presence of citrate ions. It was observed the formation of insoluble lead citrate on the metal surface and its stoichiometric structure is Pb3(C6H5O7).4 H2O. The lead dissolution is affected to the concentration of citrate ions in the medium and to the buffering solution characteristics. When increasing citrate ions concentration in solution, the formation of insoluble lead citrate on the metal surface does not occur. Probably this compound is precipitated due to the pH increase nearby the metal surface. The lead dissolution kinetics and the lead citrate morphology are influenced by the stirring of the solution. However, the mechanism of dissolution is practically unchanged. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.20120049O chumbo é um dos metais que mais desperta o interesse da comunidade científica devido à sua toxicidade e a de seus compostos frente aos seres vivos. Por outro lado, o íon citrato é um agente complexante que tem a habilidade de solubilizar diversos íons metálicos em solução. No entanto, pouco é reportado na literatura sobre a dissolução do chumbo metálico na presença de íons citrato em soluções ácidas. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a dissolução do chumbo em soluções ácidas (pH 4) na presença de íons citrato. Foi observada a formação de citrato de chumbo insolúvel na superfície do metal, cuja estrutura estequiométrica é Pb3(C6H5O7).4H2O. A precipitação deste composto ocorre devido ao aumento do pH próximo a superfície do chumbo. Com o incremento de íons citrato em solução é verificado que não há a ocorrência de produtos insolúveis sobre a superfície. Este último fato, provavelmente, está associado ao efeito complexante de íons citrato frente a íons Pb(II)  em solução. A cinética de dissolução do metal e a morfologia do citrato de chumbo são influenciadas pela agitação do meio. O mecanismo de dissolução do chumbo não é alterado. Verifica-se que a dissolução do chumbo em meio ácido é influenciada pela concentração de íons citrato no meio e pelas características tamponantes da solução. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.2012004
