Since the efficacy and safety of many currently available analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anticonvulsant drugs are not adequate, there is a continuing search for new drug candidates. Benzaldehyde semicarbazone (BS) inhibits convulsions in experimental models of epilepsy. Upon inclusion of BS into cyclodextrins (CDs) a 75-85% reduction of the dose necessary to induce the anticonvulsant effect is observed. BS also inhibits the nociceptive response and edema induced by different stimuli, and angiogenesis in experimental animals, suggesting that the compound, like many anticonvulsant drugs, presents anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The wide variety of bioactivities indicates that BS and related compounds, either free or included into CDs, represent a promising group of drug candidates that may be useful in the treatment of human or veterinary diseases. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.20100002A busca por novos fármacos analgésicos, anti-inflamatórios e anticonvulsivantes é importante, tendo em vista que a eficácia e a segurança de muitos medicamentos em uso clínico não são adequadas. Benzaldeído semicarbazona (BS) inibe convulsões em modelos experimentais de epilepsia. A inclusão de BS em ciclodextrinas (CDs) reduz em 75-85% a dose necessária para a indução do efeito anticonvulsivante. BS inibe a resposta nociceptiva e o edema induzidos por diferentes estímulos, e atenua a angiogênese em animais experimentais, o que sugere que o composto, assim como muitos anticonvulsivantes, apresenta também ação analgésica e anti-inflamatória.
