My chapter examines the gold ornaments that adorned a man buried at Sitio Conte, a necropolis primarily for wealthy adult men in Panama between 750 and 950 CE. I interpret the imagery of his helmet, pendants, chest plates, bracelets, and greaves. A variety of creatures appear on his ornaments: crocodiles, birds, bats, snakes, humans, and combinations of human beings with non-human animals. I conclude the chapter with a discussion of the man’s ornaments in relation to anthropological ideas about the reconstitution of the person after death.
