和50年から60年までの大腸癌初回手術491例中, 70歳以上の高齢者は102例, 20.8%であった. 組織学的に高分化型腺癌が多く, stage I, II症例が49%を占め, 治癒切除例の累積5生率72.8%, 相対5生率75.5%と非高齢者と遜色ない手術成績が得られた. 直腸癌手術では排尿・排便に関する慎重な配慮が必要であるが, 高齢者大腸癌の手術適応とし, 生活意欲があり普通の生活をしている限り年齢自体での手術適応の制限はないと判断され, 根治性を計った標準術式の採用により良好な成績が得られると考えられた. また, riskの高い重症例でも麻酔法の工夫により原発巣切除を試みれば愁訴もとれ延命効果も期待できることが知られた.
