The statistics of vertigineous patients in our university hospital showed that there is some relation between the variation of blood pressure and the onset of vertigo/dizziness. We investigated whether acute hypertension, which was experimentally induced by intravenous injection of metaraminol in guinea pigs, brought about change in the blood-brain barrier and inner ear barrier; Evans-blue was used as the protein tracer. Multiple Evans-blue extravasations became evident in cerebral and cerebellar corteces after acute hypertension, but they were not obvious in the cochlea. Microscopically, nubeculla was observed in the scala vestibuli but not in other parts of the labyrinth. There were no pathological findings in the stria vascularis, hair cells or Corti's organ.
