 Felix Lope de Vega, in his play El Amante agradecido (ca. 1602), writes a praise to Felipe II, after the death of the king in 1598. The praise, almost three hundred lines dedicated to the gravestone that the city of Seville built in honour of Felipe II, does not really belong with the main purpose of the play: an urban comedy with a lot of picaresque components. This article focuses on why the writer included that sort of eulogy and studies the different sources of the fragment.  En su comedia El amante agradecido, Lope de Vega introduce un elogio dedicado al túmulo que la ciudad de Sevilla erigió a Felipe II en 1598, tras su muerte el El Escorial. Tras un análisis de dicho encomio, se lleva a cabo un estudio minucioso de las fuentes que pudo haber utilizado el autor, quien en los años cercanos a la redacción de la comedia (ca. 1602) viajó a Sevilla. Además, el artículo establece algunas hipótesis acerca de por qué el dramaturgo tuvo la necesidad de incluir un panegírico de tales dimensiones en una comedia urbana con pretensiones picarescas
