The aim of this paper is to investigate factors that shape the international production geography of apparel industry and to search which of these factors effect Istanbul. For this aim, advantages and disadvantages of being located in Istanbul for apparel firms as well as the reasons of why apparel firms prefer to stay in Istanbul or to move from Istanbul have been investigated. Paper is generally based on secondary data. In addition, some of the results of field research, which is being made by the writer for her PhD thesis to investigate changes on geography of international supply chain of apparel industry, have been used. Industrial firms have been moved away from Istanbul to find out larger and cheaper land since 1950’s. They have moved to east and west of Istanbul with the effects of factors i.e. accessibility as well as being close to market, Istanbul and skilled labour. This decentralization process has been encouraged by incentive policies and master plans. Some of the apparel firms in Istanbul moved to countries where labor force was cheaper in 2000’s. However, according to TUIK statistics, %52 of apparel firms have still been located in Istanbul. The researches show that nearly %90 of firms operating in textile industry do not want to move away from Istanbul. Rich labor pool, strong relationship of Istanbul with Asian and European Market and face to face communication advantages presented by Istanbul offices of the firms that supply input make Istanbul a preferable center for apparel industry despite of the higher costs.
