This research aims at analyzing the spatial distribution of Babitonga Bay bottom sediments (Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil) through multivariate statistical analysis. Two techniques were applied to characterize 140 samples of sediments: Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Each sample was represented by eight variables, resulting in a total of 1120 cases. The cluster analysis allowed the distinction of sedimentation environments inside the bay. Through PCA it was possible to explain 88,79 % of the variance of the sampled points in the first component and to identify the most important variables for the proposed zonation. The results indicated three large environments in Babitonga Bay estuarine complex. The first one was identified as marine influence and was composed by well selected sands with high biodetritic carbonate concentrations, and is mainly located close to bay’s inlets. The second group was recognized as an estuarine environment and was composed by fine and poorly sorted sediments with a high percentage of organic matter. This group was situated mainly in the inner areas of the bay. The third environment represented a transitional zone between the areas of marine and estuarine influence.
