The use of antihypertensive drugs is an effective strategy to reduce blood pressure. Several studies suggest that an intervention like SMS reminders and home monitoring programs may be effective for improving patient’s adherence and, as a result, controlling the blood pressure in hypertensive patients. This study aimed to determine the role of SMS reminders and home monitoring in lowering patient’s blood pressure. A preand postintervention design were conducted at two primary healthcare facilities in Banyumas Regency from May to June 2018. Thirty patients were recruited, and they received a one-month intervention of daily SMS and home visits by a research assistant once in two weeks. The primary measurable outcome was the improvement of blood pressure control between the control and the intervention groups. The data were analyzed using a paired T-test at a significance level of 0.05. The result showed that the systolic blood pressure in the control group was less improved than the intervention group (-2.4 and -6.43, respectively). The diastolic blood pressure improved by -3.1 and -0.04, but these results could not be explained. The systolic blood pressure decreased significantly in the intervention group (p<0.05). When compared with the absence of intervention, the combination of SMS reminders and home blood pressure monitoring were more effective in lowering the systolic blood pressure in hypertension patients.
