The article aims to introduce the relation between sovereignty and transition. It is argued that Latin American transitions defy the proper tópos where dwelt the traditional predicates of sovereignty. In so doing, they allow a totally different grasp of the persistence of sovereignty in terms of an ongoing aporia. On the one hand, sovereignty is the claim for sovereignty in a continent originally destituted of the European contours of the concept. On the other hand, sovereignty is the image of a world now gone, the theoretical frame of political-legal institutions pertaining to a recent but finished past. Emphasis is added to transitional pacts, the mechanisms through which transitions are deemed controlled and how they reproduce the socalled logic of sovereignty.
