Since the discovery of the fi rst statin in 1971, studies of this class of drugs have been constantly evolving with interesting results that go beyond their primary pharmacological action. Statins are shown to have an intriguing range of pharmacological actions, the so-called pleiotropic effects, including anti-infl ammatory, antidiabetic, improvement in Alzheimer disease, improvement in endothelial dysfunction, antioxidant, among others. The purpose of this literature review is to demonstrate the amount of studies about this class of drugs and confi rm the relevance of pleiotropic effects.
