La tradición antigua menciona la fundación de colonias romanas en Ardea, Sutrium y Nepet, que por el contrario son consideradas por los modernos colonias federales latinas desde su mismo origen. El análisis del proceso colonizador muestra sin embargo que se trata de sendos casos de colonización interna, promovida por Roma y protagonizada por los habitantes de las respectivas ciudades, sin la participación de la liga latina.According to ancient tradition, Ardea, Sutrium and Nepet were founded as Roman colonies. Nevertheless they are considered by modern scholarship Latin federal colonies since their foundation. The examination of the colonization process will show that this is a case of internal colonization promoted by Rome, that enrolled the inhabitants themselves of this three towns as new colonists with no participation of the Latin League
