The celebrations of the millennium of Christianity and the beginnings of the Polish state, as a resultof deep political conflict, could not be organized jointly by the State and Church. Centuries of belonging tothe Christian community were opposed to the twentieth-century history of socialist Poland, acknowledgedin propaganda material as “the crowning of all the nation’s historical development.” It was no different inWarmia and Masuria, where the presentation and interpretation of Polish heritage (concerning the Polishnessof these lands and their general development after 1945), aimed to distance society from the Church, includingparticipation in the millennium celebrations, in the case of Olsztyn province, organised in Frombork, withthe participation of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. The aim was to counter attacks on the Church and the clergy,and especially the propaganda campaign related to the post-war period. The competing, secular celebration ofthe Millennium of Poland was organized in Lidzbark Warmiński, with the participation of the highest, partyadministrative provincial authorities.
