In this paper, the variability of the Antarctic\udCircumpolar Current system produced by purely intrinsic\udnonlinear oceanic mechanisms is studied through a sigmacoordinate\udocean model, implemented in a large portion of\udthe Southern Ocean at an eddy-permitting resolution under\udsteady surface heat and momentum fluxes. The mean transport\udthrough the Drake Passage and the structure of the main\udAntarctic Circumpolar Current fronts are well reproduced\udby the model. Intrinsic variability is found to be particularly\udintense in the Subantarctic Front and in the Argentine\udBasin, on which further analysis is focused. The lowfrequency\udvariability at interannual timescales is related to\udbimodal behavior of the Zapiola Anticyclone, with transitions\udbetween a strong and collapsed anticyclonic circulation\udin substantial agreement with altimeter observations. Variability\udon smaller timescales shows clear evidence of topographic\udRossby-wave propagation along the eastern and\udsouthern flanks of the Zapiola Rise and of mesoscale eddies,\udalso in agreement with altimeter observations. The analysis\udof the relationship between the low- and high-frequency variability\udsuggests possible mechanisms of mutual interaction
