In this paper I analyse the concepts about settlementof two cultures in the Sepik region of Papua NewGuinea. These concepts include ideas of spaceorientation. Further points of the analysis are: thefounding of villages, settlement patterns, ceremonialground, symbolic expressions for their villages andrituals for village strength and unity. Among theSawos we have the comparison between village andhouse, the founding of a village is compared to thebuilding of a house. The first settlers of a village whoare called the «coconut people» are of great importance for the settlement. The ceremonial groundcontains symbolically cultural elements which are thecentre of the village. The Sawos speak of their villageas a female being. The Kwanga and the Sawos have assymbol for their village the coconut palm. Among theKwanga the breadfruit-tree is associated with settlement and human birth
