It has recently been shown, bycomputation of the linear growth rate, that midlatitudesporadic-E (Es) layers are subject to a large scaleelectrodynamic instability. This instability is a logicalcandidate to explain certain frontal structuring events, andpolarization electric fields, which have been observed in Eslayers by ionosondes, by coherent scatter radars, and by rockets.However, the original growth rate derivation assumed an infinitelythin Es layer, and therefore did not address the shortwavelength cutoff. Also, the same derivation ignored the effectsof F region loading, which is a significant wavelength dependenteffect. Herein is given a generalized derivation that remediesboth these short comings, and thereby allows a computation of thewavelength dependence of the linear growth rate, as well ascomputations of various threshold conditions. The wavelengthdependence of the linear growth rate is compared with observedperiodicities, and the role of the zeroth order meridional wind isexplored. A three-dimensional paper model is used to explain theinstability geometry, which has been defined formally in previousworks
