Gordon et al.1 2 have shown that humans use visual and haptic information in the programming of the grip forces for lifting objects of different volumes but equal weight. They have reported that visual and haptic cues influence the anticipatory control of the grip forces during the initial phases of lifting, in accordance with the observed effects in "size -weight illusion"3'. After the object is lifted, equivocal information about the object weight is obtained and the influence of the "illusion" on the grasping force is corrected in the static holding phase. Here, we are concerned with the effect of the lower biomechanics of the hand (which depends on the finger posture) on the static grasping force, when humans lift objects having different volumes but equal weight. We test the hypothesis that if during grasping of an object, the finger posture changes then the static grasping force will change, even after adequate information about the object is available to the higher Central Nervous System (CNS). An experiment was designed in two parts. In the first case, subjects were asked to lift and steadily hold objects of different volumes but equal weight, using their thumb and index finger. In the second case, subjects were asked to hold the "handle" attached on top of the object and lift the objects. The results show that the static finger forces were scaled to the object volume in the first case, while it was not scaled to the object volume in the second case.
