Sixty-four cases of locally recurrent malignant soft tissue tumors were studied. Fifty-two cases were first treated at initial surgery with a marginal or intralesional margin. Twelve cases were referred to our hospital with no primary surgery. Eleven of these patients with recurrent tumors were locally controlled using a limb sparing procedure and five required amputation of disarticulation. Success rate of local curability by re-operation was only 25%. The cause of local recurrences in 14 cases initially treated in our hospital were as follows; 9 cases with intralesional resection, 5 with marginal resection (two patients had their former operated site widely re-excised), and two enucleated cases that were clinically misdiagnosed as benign tumors. All of the cases that were resected with a narrow margin recurred. To prevent local recurrence, careful pre-operative assessment with special attention of extent, localization and histologic diagnosis of every tumor is necessary.
