The devastating tsunami generated by the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake affected hundreds of km of coastline in Japan. It however provided a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of such events. It also led to a renewed interest in using geochemical techniques to identify the source of the sediments and discriminate deposits. This Special Issue includes nine original research papers that can be grouped into two main themes: 1. historical and paleotsunamis and their deposits (3 papers) and 2. geochemical characteristics of tsunami deposits and their behaviour (6 papers). Sugawara (2014) discusses the issues that researchers face when attempting to estimate the magnitude of events, such as the 2011 event and the 869 Jogan Earthquake and Tsunami, based on the deposits they left behind. Kitamura and Kobayashi (2014) report on geological evidence for mid to late Holocene paleotsunamis and late Holocene coseismic uplift preserved in coastal sediments in the Shizuoka Plain and southern Izu Peninsula, while Watanabe et al. (2014a) carried out a detailed study of sedimentary sequences on the Sendai Plain, which comprised sandy units left behind by the Jogan tsunami. Four papers report on various geochemical characteristics to identify the source of sediments. Nara et al. (2014) used TOC/TN, total sulfur and sulfur isotopic ratios to discriminate the source of tsunami deposits in different areas of Japan, either marine or slag from mines, while Hara et al. (2014) base their work on metal composition and speciation, and a shift in bacterial activity. Yamada et al. (2014) found that deposit chemical characteristics reflected sitespecific geological and mineralogical properties, whereas Kuwatani et al. (2014) used principal component analysis to distinguish deposits and highlighted the influence of seawater on their chemical composition. Lastly, the results of experimental research on metals and arsenic in tsunami deposits are presented in two papers. Watanabe et al. (2014b) carried out leaching experiments of metals and arsenic using pure water, and artificial and natural seawater, while Ogawa et al. (2014) report on dissolution experiments under anoxic and aerobic conditions to predict the behaviour of arsenic from waste dumps. These studies contribute to our increasing understanding of tsunamis but also about their impact on the environment, for future risk reduction.
