化 石 の 分析 と環 境 解 釈 が 行 なわ れ た が,環 境 解 釈 の 前 提 と な る化 石 の 産 状 の 分析 は 十 分 で は な い 。 また,わ が 国 で行 な わ れ て きた 研 究 も含 め,本 論 で特に注 目した堆積速度など群集の組成 を決定す る他の要因については,十 分検討 されていない。 堆積相解析やシーケンス層序学の進農により化石 を含む地層の堆積環境の理解が進んだ現在,底 生 動物群集を改めて見直すことがで きる状況が整っ てきたと言えよう。 そこで,筆 者が日本の第四系で行なって きた手 法,す なわち堆積相の分析 と二枚貝類を中心 とす る化石の組成 と産状の分析を並行 して行 なうこと によって,ニ ュージーランドで最 も詳 しい研究が 行なわれてきたワンガヌイ南西のキャッスルクリ フ海岸の露頭(図1)を 精査 した。特に, Abbott andCarter(1994)に よってここで認定 された10 の堆積サイクルの中の最上部のサ イクル10(AbbottandCarter,1994で はCyclothemと 呼 んで いる)を 再検討 した。そして,そ の結果 を堆積速 度の変化 という観点から見直 したところ,コ ンデ ンセーシ ョンと急速埋没に代表 される堆積速度の 変化が底生動物群集の組成を変化 させる重要な原 因であったことを明らかにすることができた。
