This paper discusses both, the objectives and challenges of the ongoing research and development industrial project (R&D) MERGE Microgrids for Efficient, Reliable and Greener Energy. During the MERGE project, four microgrids with different features and goals will be fully designed, deployed and tested; operating either at grid-connected mode or at grid-islanded mode. The microgrids are a laboratorial microgrid that will take place at the Smart Grid Laboratory (LabREI) at FEECUNICAMP, a university campus microgrid, a DC nanogrid with electric vehicle charging points, and a residential microgrid outside the university campus. The MERGE project is a multidisciplinary effort that combines research and engineering tasks in the following topics: sizing, designing and specification of microgrids, energy management systems, power electronics, state estimation, forecasting, energy stability, cybersecurity and regulation. In the end, the microgrids of the MERGE project will be the first of their kind and size in Brazil, providing great opportunities for new business models, and greener, more flexible and reliable electricity to the final users. Resumo: Neste artigo, discute-se os principais objetivos e desafios do projeto de pesquisa e desenvolvimento (projeto P&D) chamado MERGE Microgrids for Efficient, Reliable and Greener Energy. Durante o projeto MERGE, quatro microrredes com características e finalidades diferentes serão planejadas, implementadas e testadas, tanto no modo conectado à rede como no modo isolado: uma microrrede ao nível laboratorial que terá lugar no Laboratório de Pesquisas em Redes Elétricas Inteligentes – LabREI da UNICAMP, uma microrrede de alguns prédios do campus da UNICAMP, uma nanorrede DC com pontos de carregamento de veículos elétricos, e uma microrrede residencial fora da universidade. O projeto MERGE é um esforço multidisciplinar que combina pesquisa e engenharia aplicadas aos seguintes tópicos: dimensionamento, projeto e especificação das microrredes, sistemas de gerenciamento energético, eletrônica de potência, estimação de estado, previsão de demanda/geração renovável, estabilidade, segurança cibernética e regulação brasileira. No final, as microrredes do projeto MERGE serão as primeiras do seu tipo e tamanho no Brasil, gerando oportunidades para novos modelos de negócio, e eletricidade mais sustentável, flexível e confinável aos usuários finais.
