Many diseases of poultry, particularly Listeriosis may be disseminated by faecal contamination of the environment or water. An assessment of the prevalence of l . monocy1ogenes and other listeria species in poultry faeces often utilized as manure in soil supplements for maximum crop yield was evaluated. The results of the study showed that of the 480 faecal samples screened, 108 (22.5%) were positive for ltsreria monocy1oge11es and other Listeria species. The local chicken droppings had the highest rate of recovery for number of Lisreria 36 (7 .5%), followed by Spent old layers 27 (5.63%), then turkey 25 (5.2%) and broilers 20 (4. 17%). Characterisation of the L1sreria species showed tha1 L mu11ocy10ge11e:. was 64(59.3%), L. 11•111101·11. 20 ( 18 5%), L. gray1 9(8.3%), L. seeligen 4(3. 7%), L. 11 e/:, /en -1(3 7%) and L. murray1 4(3.7%). The public health 11nphca1io11 ofihis paihogen has necessitated a reappra isal of th1s emerg111g foodbome pathogen and strategies for Its control.
