When a patient complains of uncomfortable blurred vision, speculation about the cause for the blurriness may be made based on the general diagnostic information. If the cause is in the optics of the eye, a quantitative evaluation to pinpoint the cause is now possible after aberration measurement with wavefront sensors has become available. Wavefront aberrations are the deviations of actual wavefronts from the ideal perfect wavefronts. The Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor represents the typical principle in wavefront aberration measurement that can be achieved with the obtained Hartmann image. Wavefront aberrations are often expressed using Zernike polynomials.
