On irradiation (λ = 300 nm) in methanol the title compound 1 undergoes both solvent addition to α-methoxylactone 3 and cycloreversion to a mixture of the diastereomeric Z,ZE,Zand E,Edimethyl 3,3’-diselenodipropenoates 4-6 and to 2,2,4,4-tetramethylpentan-2-one (7), whereas on solid state irradiation only ketone 7 and polymeric material are detected.
