This work describes the present situation of the most important methods for checking the limit state of local buckling in full core metallic beams, desponible nowadays for its application in a Project phase. A comparative study of the methods proposed by different standards and recommendations is carried out for this purpose, taking as main reference the Eurocode num. 3 (ref. 1, 1984). Among the different disponible practical methods the author advice the effective section method, since this one gets the greatest advantages of the material and permit, at the same time, simplified expressions of simple use for double T sections; and from the different methods based in the effective section concept, there is also a comparison and a selective proposal. The optimization of the section of large edges requieres the straining of the cores slenderness, and in this field the methods of postcritic analysis offer the possibility to reduce to the minimum the flexural rigidity, with the resulting economic and constructive advantages. However it requires enough knowledge of this methods and a greater effort regarding calculation than this needed for the sectios named "semicompact" which are also reviewed in this work.
