The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the study of Rio de la Plata church at the end of colonial order. It is a research advance on the life of Montevideo’s vicar priest Juan Jose Ortiz, who made a great effort to spread the catholicism and joined revolution in 1810, causing serious conflicts between political and religious authorities. Ortiz was a case of a “rebel priest”, that unlike many members of the resident clergy in the Provincia Oriental supported not the radical party but Buenos Aires centralist government.
