Social innovations in the town – a way to deal with uncertain future? The purpose of the paper was to analyse the capability of creating social innovations in Velenje and recognize those with a potential to address the key developmental challenges of the town. The research was mostly based on the participatory approach. Initially, we evaluated the level of social sustainability by using the Social Sustainability Framework. It was determined that Velenje is a town with a high level of social sustainability, while its main weaknesses and problems are a bipolar and vulnerable economy, the uncertain future of the coal mine, and the outmigration of youth. As solutions, the local representatives recommended founding a fish farm, strengthening the NGO sector, and establishing a special mentoring scheme. Velenje has faced crises many times, but has always managed to overcome them, in part due to social innovations founded on social cohesion, solidarity, and a culture of collaboration in the town.
