In order to prevent workers from quitting the workforce due to work related disability, the concept of work ability has developed a valuable tool to tailor interventions at individual level. The concept of work ability expresses the interrelation between the productive potential of a worker, the worker’s individual characteristics and work related factors [1,2]. Thus, the assessment of work ability should measure the ability of workers to perform their jobs, taking into account the specific psycho-social and physical work related factors, mental and physical capabilities and health too. On the basis of this concept, Finnish researchers have constructed the so called Work Ability Index (WAI), which is based on a questionnaire that combines subjective experience of one’s ability to cope with physical and mental requirements at work with information on disease and sick leave [3].
