Upon maturation, autonomous vehicles (AVs) have thepotential to provide significant benefit to society. A breadthof partially autonomous systems are already commerciallyavailable, and vehicles with advanced capabilities are testedand deployed on public roads. Although the advancementof AV technology is highly anticipated, the future of theindustry currently rests on uncertain ground with respectto regulatory oversight. The current industry standards andlegal regulations which apply to AVs are only equipped tofully ensure that simple autonomous capabilities are safe. Asvehicles become more autonomous, and as driving decisionsare shifted from human to computer, a regulatory paradigmshift will be necessary. This article reviews the present stateof AV safety standards and regulations, and discusses thepotential for regulatory evolution.
