This study is to know on the music appreciation activity in music class of the public education sites in Korea. This study is a base research for continuing study for improving quality of music appreciation. An object of this study is music textbooks of elementary schools and middle schools, which are national common curriculum. Highschool curriculum is not included because a music class is one of the selective subjects for students, and also categorized into two-separated tracks – common and advanced curriculum depending on grades. Also for the 1 and 2 grades in elementary school, music textbook is offered in a form of the integrated textbook, title as ‘Enjoying Activities’. So this is also not included in this study. For this study, the music textbook according to 2015 Revision Curriculum are a subject of this and by school years and publishing companies, songs and music pieces for a class of music appreciation teaching are organized for analysis. Learning for the appreciation activities presented in the music textbook is almost based on passive learning form. In the current textbooks of our country, the development through the activities of the music appreciation mostly is centered on giving information on composers or/and the periods of the music pieces, utilizing around the listening activities. For the learning cycle in the music appreciation, ‘listening – feeling(emotion) expressing’ is the basic ideal expected learning circle for learners. However learner’s simple listening is mostly emphasized in the music textbooks. Through this base research, continuous study is necessary over the direction of the music appreciation class in national common curriculum, and follow-up study should be continued on class music appreciation in aspects of the use of textbooks by teachers in teaching and the meaningful role of teachers in the class for music teaching in general.
