Objective: identify the occurrence of syphilis in pregnant women, their complications, development and the role of nursing in this scenario. Method: Integrative literature review, including articles published from 2013 to july 2018, in portuguese and english, in the databases BVS (Lilacs, Scielo and Medline), Periódicos Capes and PubMed. The data were included in tables trying to identify the occurrence of the disease and the associated factors, from prevention to treatment. Results: It has been identified that the main adverse outcomes in the fetus arefetal and perinatal death, prematurity, low birth weight and spontaneous abortion. The main circumstances that interfere in prenatal care are spouse treatment and late adherence to followup. Conclusion: For global elimination of the disease it is necessary to progress in prevention and innovative strategies involving clinical management, improvements in diagnosis, timely treatment for pregnant and spouse.
